A dime. Three pennies. A large white paper clip. A 19c stamp. Three screws. Two safety pins. A bit of dried leaf, hard and shiny, as though glazed and fired. A blue and white Japanese dish. Paying attention. For the moment it has stopped being one of the very worst times in my life and has become the very best. And why is this you say. It is because of the every day thing, paying attention to the every day thing. It has become so good I cannot get to the kitchen sink to clean it. I cannot fill my glass with ice. I cannot sweep up the scorched pine branches I have clipped from the tree. I forget I need to go to the bathroom. I forget I meant to bathe. I forget that I am thirsty.

A dime. Three pennies. A large white paper clip. I read it out loud to myself.
