2001/counter

I am a counter
by nature,
the number
of poems written
today jotted down.
I saw a thing on t.v.
about a writer
who did the same,
a daily notation
of the number of words,
followed by thank you,
a devotional task
I decide to take
up.
And put with the image
I’ve held on to,
of Thomas Wolfe lumbering
through the New York streets
at night,
chanting to the sky,
I wrote 10,000
words today,
I wrote 10,000
words today.
