2001/kite

A man drives away
from the beach
with a kite flying
from his car window.
I’d like to follow him,
but have passed him already
before I realize
what is going on.
It would be in-
discreet to circle back
and wait behind him
where he has pulled over
to maneuver the cord.
A couple with their kids
are flying similar kites
on the beach.
She shovels a trench
in the sand,
or what looks like one,
I do not know why.
And as she does
she keeps saying,
we should have
started this
at 10 a.m.,
