2005/dog.wpd

A cool October morning,
the dog sits on my lap,
while I convince her
of the virtues of drinking tea
before going outside.
She’s reasonable to negotiate with,
unlike most people.
She circles and curls up,
keeping her ears erect,
alert to birds, cats, cars.
Ready to (fully) embrace the day.
Me, I need to sip my tea,
as I stare at the neighbor’s
eucalyptus tree, and listen
to the hawk.
