2001/backpaws

Evander interrupts
his play to bathe,
back paws wide apart.
He has an extra claw
in the front,
a thumb.
My husband doesn’t
believe me that
he can turn the knob
to open the door,
but he does
if it’s not closed tight.
I think it’s the paw
that makes him smart,
the way he holds
things up close
to get a better
view.
